Muhsin Hendricks



Muhsin Hendricks (* 1970 ) is an imam , in South Africa is alive.

The world's first openly gay Imam [1] is a member of the International Advisory Board of the Hirschfeld-Eddy Foundation and director of The Inner Circle (Islamic Organization for the Social and Spiritual advancement of Sexually Diverse Groups and Individuals, South Africa) [2] . He is also the first openly gay, by the Islamic Social Welfare Council (ISWA), a conservative organization, which it years ago because of his sexual orientation was excluded, invited to discuss with them. [3]

Life

Hendricks grew up in Cape Town on a deeply religious household. For the local orthodox Muslim community were his grandfather Imam, his father, a spiritual healer and mother Islamic teacher. [4] Between 1990 and 1994 studied Hendricks Arabic, Islamic law and Islamic theology at the University of Karachi (Jamia Dirasat Al-Islamia) in Pakistan . After graduation, he returned to Cape Town and was part-time co-imam in a local mosque, taught at three more and was respected Arabic teacher. [5] [6] At the age of 23, he agreed to an arranged marriage with him in principle sympathetic one woman, among other things, is expected because of an imam marriage. Shortly before the marriage, he told his wife about his homosexuality. After she was initially furious, she wanted to help him "solve the problem" and they wanted to try it anyway with each other. In the course of the marriage failed, but it was the first child on the way, followed by two more. After six [5] [6] years, they divorced. After he spoke to his mother one month after the divorce rumors that he had to divorce because of his homosexuality, he had her before his coming-out . After the first was near fainting, she began to understand over time. When he lived his first relationship, she was ten days visit. When she returned, she said to him: "I see no difference between your relationship and a heterosexual relationship, because you two arguing like husband and wife." [6] For him, this was the confirmation that they are henceforth accepted. In his school, rumors surfaced that he had relationships with his students and he lost his job in the madrasa . [5] So he decided to come out. By the time he realized that he was not alone and other gay men are forced by social pressure to marry, and some seek solace in alcohol or even suicide attempt. In 1998 he founded Al-fitrah , the first gay Muslim organization in his country and went to the public. [5] In his local community he was told by its own account yet never discrimination. [6] derives Today Muhsin Hendricks, "The Inner Circle" in Cape Town, which helps as a non-profit organization for homosexual Muslims coming out. Under the title "Ask the Imam," he also maintains a telephone counseling service. [7]

Today, he is invited around the world to talk about homosexuality and Islam. [8] [9] . Hendricks worked in the documentary A Jihad for Love (2007), and thus became known worldwide.
